By , the war between Masseria and Maranzano had begun. More than 60 members from both sides were dead. It appeared there would be no end with both families having recruited more soldiers during the war, but on April 15 th , the war took a sudden turn when Masseria was murdered in a Coney Island restaurant having been set up by Lucky Luciano and his crew.
As it turned out, Luciano was upset with Masseria for some time. With that change Maranzano appointed himself as the Boss of all Bosses.
Maranzano soon found out about the detractors and ordered a hit on Luciano. Luciano had the wheels in motion to take control from Maranzano.
With his death, Luciano became the most powerful gangster in New York. Realizing the strife between the families, Luciano and his crew created a governing body for the five families.
The commission consisted of one leader from each of the five families, the Chicago Outfit headed up by Al Capone, and the Magaddino crime family of Buffalo New York.
Luciano and his crew effectively controlled the commission for many years but he succeeded in keeping the commission together.
When they were in place he renamed the family to the Luciano family. State trooper Edgar D. Croswell had become aware that Barbara's son was reserving rooms in local hotels along with the delivery of a large quantity of meat from a local butcher to the Barbara home.
Having found that many of these cars were registered to known criminals, state police reinforcements came to the scene and began to set up a roadblock.

On April 8, Strollo left his house to go for a walk and was never seen again. His body was never recovered.
In , an alleged murder threat from Genovese propelled mobster Joseph Valachi into the public spotlight. In June, Genovese supposedly accused Valachi, also imprisoned in Atlanta, of being an informer and gave Valachi the kiss of death.
His killers had attached two concrete blocks to his legs and tied his hands. It was widely assumed that Genovese had ordered Rupolo's murder for testifying against him in the Boccia murder trial.
